When Should I Get My Heater Installed?

When Should I Get My Heater Installed?

Keeping a heater well-maintained helps extend its lifespan. If a homeowner suspects issues but isn’t sure how to identify them or perform repairs or upgrades themselves, it may be time for an inspection with a licensed heating professional. HVAC experts are trained to determine if a new heating installation is necessary.

Scheduling Home Heater Maintenance

Do-it-yourself home heater inspections will help determine if a visit from an HVAC expert is necessary. Homeowners can identify or resolve common issues before calling in a professional inspection, or at least provide helpful information to share with the technician before or during their visit. To help homeowners know whether they need an inspection or not, here are some areas to investigate:

  • Assess whether all rooms in the house, including those farthest from the heater, are receiving adequate warmth.
  • Track the frequency of heating unit repairs to help decide when it’s time to replace the system.
  • Monitor noise levels from the heating system and check for dust accumulation in the home.
  • Evaluate indoor air quality by noting any burning smells when the heater runs, which may signal a need for a new system.
  • Determine if the air feels excessively dry during winter, as this can indicate leaky ductwork or insufficient heating performance.

One often overlooked component that heating installation experts examine is the blower wheel. When debris accumulates on it, the heating system must work harder; when it is clean, the blower wheel efficiently pushes warm air through the vents. Keeping it clean can reduce strain on your furnace and improve airflow.

Comparing Heater Installation Options

When deciding on a new heating system, comparing different options can be very useful. One common comparison is whether to replace a ducted heater with a ductless mini-split system. Since ductless mini-splits are often easier to install, they usually require less time than full ducted systems. Even if the current heater still works, many choose to upgrade to a more efficient system. Options include traditional furnaces, heat pumps, ductless mini-splits, and electric resistance heating. HVAC technicians assess the existing system and recommend replacements based on the setup.

Furnaces produce heat by burning natural gas, oil, or propane and circulate it through air ducts. Heat pumps move heat indoors from outside using refrigerant. Ductless mini-splits consist of one or more indoor air handlers connected to an outdoor compressor. Electric resistance systems warm a home by energizing electric coils. Because installation complexity varies by system, the time needed for heating installation can differ significantly. A professional technician will evaluate your space and help you find a suitable replacement option.

Needing Inspection or Installation

Home heating inspectors evaluate whether a system runs efficiently, needs repairs, or requires full replacement. The choice of heater replacement depends on factors like available space and the home’s structure. Scheduling HVAC maintenance can involve varying lead times. Technician availability may improve in late spring and early fall. This is because winter, when heaters break down, and summer, when air conditioners need attention, can be their busiest seasons. Check your system before weather conditions start to change in the fall and spring.

Schedule Home Heating Installation

When it’s time to replace an old heater or install a new one, the decision often depends on its purpose, the condition of the current heater, available space and structure, and how far in advance you can schedule. After performing self-maintenance checks and inspections and discussing options with an HVAC expert, you may have a clearer understanding of whether it’s time for a new system.
