Top Roofing Mistakes That Can Cost You

Top Roofing Mistakes That Can Cost You

The roof is the most crucial part of our home, so keeping it safe and secure should be our top priority. It is not surprising that everyone needs to repair or install their roof occasionally. However, a little mistake may lead to significant problems, such as decreasing roof longevity, its effectiveness, or even increasing the risks of leakages.

Whether you are a homeowner considering DIY or hiring a roofing contractor, avoiding common pitfalls is essential. When preparing for roofing installment, there are lots of things that may cost you. So, understanding the top roofing mistakes and avoiding them helps in increasing your roof’s lifetime value, and its integrity, and also increases your home value.

Have a look at most common roofing mistakes;

Choosing the Wrong Material

Which roofing material is perfect for your home? It is one of the most complicated questions every homeowner asks. Each material has its pros and cons. The majority of individuals go for cheap materials to save on costs, but this decision can go wrong. It will only give advantages on the price you pay, but they cannot withstand harsh weather conditions that lead to frequent repairs or sometimes a full roof replacement.

It is essential to opt for material that is suited to your climate condition. So, hiring a certified and licensed roofing contractor will help you in this process. They will consider the weather conditions of your area and your home architect to suggest the best roofing material. For instance, if your design consists of a low slope, then asphalt shingles are not a perfect choice.

Improper Attic Ventilation

Good attic ventilation is the key to increasing the life expectancy of your new roof. But, it is another most common and costly mistake that can be noticed. Even the best roofing materials won’t perform efficiently if they are not installed correctly. Improper attic ventilation can cause leakages, and shingles to wear out, and also contribute to wood rot and mold in roof decking.

Top Roofing Mistakes That Can Cost You

Improper attic ventilation is the most significant installation error for metal and shingle roofs that eventually results in structural damage. It is crucial to look for certified roofing professionals to avoid these common mistakes.

Incorrect Roof Flashing Installation

Flashing is a crucial component of your roofing system, as it seals joints and prevents water from seeping into your home. It is made up of steel, aluminum, or weatherproof plastic. It is especially installed at the weakest area of the roof such as chimneys, skylights, and valleys where water is more likely to pool and seep. If it is not properly installed or sealed correctly, it becomes a vulnerable spot to water and moisture.

Flashing needs to be installed properly; otherwise homeowners face severe damage to their roof structure. They need to be addressed immediately and replaced under the supervision of an experienced roofing contractor.

Failing To Consider Roof Slope

Considering the roof slope is necessary before installing a new roof. It is also a common roofing mistake that costs homeowners. Choosing the wrong material will end up with roof leaks and damage. Keep in mind that not every roofing material is suitable for a slope. Different roof slopes need different roofing materials and methods to perform properly. It plays a critical role in how your roofing system functions.  Measuring the roof slope carefully is highly imperative to check out which material is perfect for your roof.

Homeowners need to identify whether they have a steep-slope roof or low-slope roof, if they have a steep-slope roof, then asphalt shingles, metal roofing, clay or concrete tiles are the best options. For those who have low-slope roofs, then polyvinyl chloride (PVC), metal panels, and thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) are perfect.

Avoid Installing a Drip Edge

A drip edge is a metal flashing that is usually installed at the edge of your roof. It is designed to channel water away from the fascia into the gutters safely. Modern home construction requires a drip edge, whereas some older homes do not have it. So, homeowners think they do not need to install a drip edge or leak barrier while repairing or installing a new roof, which becomes the most common roofing mistake that can cost you while saving money.

If you do not add a drip edge, the entire roof might be compromised. It can even lead to mold growth or other costly damages. However, installing a drip edge to your roof helps to keep your home protected from water damage. It eventually eliminates the risk of leaks and ensures moisture doesn’t lock under the house covering.

Layering New Shingles over Old Shingles

Layering new shingles over the old ones seems like a time-saving and cost-effective solution. But in reality, doing this may conceal underlying roofing problems like leaks, water damage, wood rot, or mold. It even leads to serious problems and can add unnecessary weight to your roof, potentially causing structural damage. The problem is without realizing or spotting the fragile areas and weak points, installing new shingles may cost you in the future.

In some areas, it is legal to place new shingles over old shingles, but it is one of the leading mistakes in roofing. It is always better to strip the old shingles completely before installing new ones to ensure a clean and solid foundation.

To Wrap Up the Things

Installing a new roof is not a tranquil process. Considering every little thing will help you get a perfect roof that not only enhances your home’s appeal and appearance but also provides long-term benefits. From choosing the wrong materials to laying new shingles to old ones, each roofing mistake can lead to costly repairs. Once you understand and avoid these roofing mistakes, it helps to protect your roof in the long run. Remember, when in doubt; always prefer to contact a reputable and certified roofing contractor to ensure your job is done right the first time.
