How to Make Your Mascara Last Longer Without Drying Out

How to Make Your Mascara Last Longer Without Drying Out

Mascara is a makeup bag essential. Women the world over use this beauty product to make their eyes more prominent. It can help darken, thicken, lengthen and define eyelashes. Yet, a common inconvenience is finding that your favorite tube has dried out right when you are about to use it.

With a few smart habits, you can extend the life of your mascara. Here is how.

Understanding Mascara’s Lifespan and Common Issues

It is vital to understand what causes mascara to dry out before knowing how to prevent it.

The main reason is the external air. Opening the tube lets air enter, which thickens and dries the formula within. The act of frequently pumping the wand appears to help, but in reality, it introduces excess air, speeding up the drying process.

A few common issues include:

  • Clumping: Dry mascara products create an uneven effect due to clumping formations.
  • Flaking: Dry flakes that smudge beneath the eyes during the day are also due to a dry product.
  • Reduced Volume and Length: A dry mascara formula loses its capability of coating lashes and making the eyes more prominent.

8 Best Ways to Prevent Your Mascara from Drying Out

Here are some effective strategies for keeping your mascara fresh and usable:

1. Choose the Right Formula

The specific formula present in the product affects its lifespan. Waterproof mascaras solidify faster than other formulas. This is because they contain wax in high amounts.

If longevity is a priority, opt for regular mascara with nourishing ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid. These ingredients will help your favorite product retain moisture.

People who use waterproof formulas should maintain a dedicated tube for special occasions rather than wear it regularly.

2. Store it Properly

Mascara’s storage location makes a difference to its quality. Shelving cosmetics in bathroom cabinets gives easy access, but moisture can alter their chemical composition.

Cool, dry places that avoid direct sun exposure, such as drawers or vanities, make the best storage location for mascaras.

Some beauty buffs swear by keeping mascara upright in the refrigerator. The cold storage environment helps keep the formula consistent. However, direct exposure to freezing temperatures may break down its composition.

3. Avoid Pumping the Wand

People tend to pump the wand back and forth to extract more product, but this method introduces excess air, which causes the product to dry faster.

Gently rotate the wand inside the tube to distribute the product evenly on the brush bristles. You can also warm the formula by rolling the tube between your palms. This method allows smooth distribution without damaging the product.

4. Keep the Tube Tightly Closed

A loose cap is one of the quickest methods to dry out mascara. Close the tube tightly after each use.

Check for dried product around the rim. This can block the sealing mechanism between the tube and cap. Cleaning the opening with a fresh tissue can help ensure a tight closure.

5. Skip the Heat (Most of the Time)

Avoid using hot water or blow dryers as outside heat sources. Heat exposure leads to degradation of preservatives. This causes texture modifications that might result in bacterial contamination.

You can naturally restore a clumpy formula by submerging the sealed tube in a cup filled with warm (but not hot) water for two minutes.

6. Refresh with a Drop of Saline Solution

One drop of sterile saline solution fixes dry mascara. Add a single drop, mix well with the wand, and test the texture before applying. Don’t use water to do this, as it weakens the formula and creates conditions ideal for bacterial multiplication.

7. Replace It on Time

Every mascara has a predefined shelf life that ranges from three to six months starting from the opening date. Bacterial buildup is common when a product is used beyond its shelf life.

If you notice any change in the scent, development of flakes, or occurrence of eye irritation, discard the product. Mark the opening date on the tube with a sticker to keep track.

8. Clean the Wand Regularly

Dried mascara buildup on the wand can transfer back into the tube. This thickens the formula. You should clean the wand using a tissue between each application. Use mild soap and water on the wand for a periodic thorough cleaning. Completely dry the wand before reinstalling it.

Get Luscious Lashes for Longer

A little attention goes a long way in preserving your mascara. Always choose the right formula, store it correctly, and adopt careful application habits to extend its lifespan. Remember: when in doubt, replace it. Your eyes deserve the best care, and fresh mascara is always worth it.
