Tooth Fairy Tales from Around the World

Tooth Fairy Tales from Around the World

In the U.S., the Tooth Fairy slips a dollar or two under a child’s pillow in exchange for a freshly lost tooth. But did you know that this tradition isn’t universal? Around the world, cultures celebrate the milestone of losing baby teeth in some seriously creative—and sometimes surprising—ways.

As a family-focused Idaho Falls dentist, we love learning about the many traditions that help kids feel excited about their dental journeys. From mice to rooftops, here’s how other countries handle this tiny rite of passage.

Spain and Latin America: El Ratón de los Dientes

In many Spanish-speaking countries, it’s not a fairy who comes for lost teeth—it’s a mouse! Known as “El Ratón Pérez” or “El Ratón de los Dientes,” this beloved character visits at night to collect teeth and leave behind coins or small gifts. He’s even starred in children’s books and cartoons.

Japan: Toss It!

In Japan, children throw their lower teeth straight up into the air and upper teeth down into the ground—or onto the roof and under the floorboards, depending on the region. The idea is that this directional toss helps the adult tooth grow in straight and strong. It’s both symbolic and a bit of fun.

France: Another Tooth Mouse!

France shares the mouse tradition, too. Their version is called “La Petite Souris” (The Little Mouse). Much like in Spain, she sneaks in at night to collect teeth and leave behind a small prize. Turns out, mice and molars go way back.

Turkey: Predicting the Future

In Turkey, losing a baby tooth can be part of a child’s destiny. Parents might bury the tooth somewhere meaningful—like near a hospital if they hope the child will become a doctor, or near a school for a future teacher. It’s a mix of tradition and aspiration.

India: To the Sun!

Some Indian families toss teeth onto the roof while offering a wish or prayer to the sun. It’s both a spiritual and celebratory moment. In other areas, the tooth may be buried instead, symbolizing growth and renewal.

Mongolia: Feeding the Birds

In Mongolia, children wrap their tooth in meat fat and offer it to a dog. The belief is that if a dog eats the tooth, the new one will be as strong as the dog’s. If no dog is around, the child might bury it near a tree.

What’s the Point of These Traditions?

Each tradition might look different, but they all do one thing really well: help children mark an important milestone with positivity. Celebrating a lost tooth helps reduce fear, build confidence, and make trips to the dentist more approachable.

As your local dentist in Idaho Falls, we’re big fans of anything that gets kids excited about their dental health. Whether you go with a fairy, a mouse, or a rooftop toss, the important part is supporting your child’s journey toward a healthy smile.

Your Family’s Tooth Traditions

You don’t have to follow any one tradition exactly—feel free to create your own! Some families write notes from the Tooth Fairy, use glitter trails, or give out books instead of money. Just like flossing routines, the best one is the one you’ll stick with.

No matter what, remember to celebrate your child’s smile every step of the way.

And when it’s time for a checkup, you know who to call—your friendly Idaho Falls dentist, ready to help make those little teeth strong and bright.
