How to Host the Ultimate Outdoor Gathering at Your Home

How to Host the Ultimate Outdoor Gathering at Your Home

It’s fun to go out, sure, but sometimes you just don’t feel like getting all dressed up. Sometimes you just want to stay at home, in your PJs, and hang out with friends, which is why throwing a party at home is perfect.

But do you know what would make that party so much better? Hosting it in your backyard. Fresh air, rustling leaves, twinkling stars, filling food, and wonderful company… Of course, you can opt for the simple way: set up some folding chairs, set up the grill, and pour out a case of beers. It’s highly unlikely you’ll get complaints. However, you can also put a bit more effort and host a truly memorable gathering.

Piqued your interest? Then let’s see how to do it.

Design the Perfect Space

The perfect space is comfortable, functional, and stylish – but without it looking like you’ve made much effort. Because if it looks like it requires massive effort, that might invite a certain amount of tension to the party.

The most important consideration in creating a suitable outdoor space is how well it works with climate. For example, Virginia (especially in the northern part) enjoys hot humid summers and incredibly cold winters. Pennsylvania enjoys cool summers and cooler autumns, both conducive to entertainment outside; Because of the varying weather conditions and the environment, it’s very necessary for the outdoors to have weather-proofing.

This can certainly be achieved quite easily if you hire a good quality screened in porch builder. Call one operating in your area, describe to them what you want, and work out a solution that’ll work well for you, and your perfect space will soon be transformed.

Screened-in porch aside, you also need to measure your space, see if there’s uneven ground, and think about how your guests will move around it. Imagine your yard as having zones, like a zone for eating, a zone for lounging, possibly a zone for dancing, etc.

Next, pick a theme. A black tie may not be too appropriate, but rustic farmhouse charm or modern elegance sure would. Tie the theme together with coordinating furniture, cushions, and lighting.

What Makes Outdoor Gathering Great

Now that you have the space all ready, you have to plan the actual gathering.

Here’s what every great house outdoor event has.

  • Seating and Layout

Comfortable seating is a must because, if your guests have to fidget on their chairs the entire time because they’re uncomfortable, they’ll want to leave sooner.

Have a mix of benches and chairs, and put cushions on them to make them cozy. Arrange the seating so that it encourages people to talk to each other, so small clusters or circular setups are ideal.

If evenings are cooler, add a few throw blankets.

  • Lighting

Good lighting turns a basic outdoor area into a cozy, warm setting. Drape string lights overhead to add warmth and a soft glow, and for the tables, use LED candles or lanterns.

Pathway lights are very decorative, but also functional because they’ll guide the guests around the space.

  • Decor

Don’t go too far because decor shouldn’t be the focal point of the evening, it should just be there to make the place look inviting.

Potted plants, greenery, and flower arrangements are the most obvious choices. Add a centerpiece to the dining table, and coordinate tableware, linens, and serving dishes with the theme of the evening to make everything come together.

  • Entertainment

Eating, drinking, and talking is fun, but you need something to add to it.

Use portable speakers to play music or, if you want to go all out, hire a live band or a musician. That sure won’t be something people will soon forget! As far as activities go, you can set up yard games like cornhole, bocce ball, or a photo booth corner with themed props. Everyone will probably want some photos for social media, so why not make them extra fun?

  • Food & Drinks

You know, this won’t be an outstanding gathering without good food and amazing drinks. For appetizers, go with something fresh and bite-sized (e.g. salads filled with vegetables and potato chips), other options could be finger foods or sliders, even charcuterie boards. And for dessert? Use ice cream sundaes or go even further and get a chocolate fountain.

This can either be a DIY station for drinks and appetizers, depending on how casual it is, or guests could just help themselves to anything they want without being served by the hosts (e.g., a self-serving bar, or a Swedish buffet). A signature drink such as a special themed cocktail is always a hit and provides something your guests will remember. Remember, though, that not everyone revels in alcohol consumption, so provide alternatives for the teetotalers, like infused water, some soda drinks, or homemade lemonade.

Conclusion

Awesome gatherings don’t consist of folding napkins perfectly, matching dishware, and expensive drinks. It’s really about the ambiance, comfort, and relationships.

(Good) people are number one – the rest is irrelevant. So, even the simplest backyard can host the most perfect evening. Just plan it well, serve some delicious food and beverages, and thoroughly enjoy frolicking with your favorite people.
