Do Residential Treatment Programs Actually Work?
Many parents with teens struggling with behavioral issues or mental health conditions may be asking themselves, ‘Can a residential treatment program actually help my teen?’ Mental health is a major concern for parents with teens today; you may find that your child is depressed, anxious, dropping out of their favorite activities, skipping or underachieving in school, or using substances. If you are a parent who has exhausted many options trying to help your child and are considering sending them to a residential care facility, you are not alone.
Choosing to send your ‘troubled teen’ to a residential treatment center is a hard decision, but it is a decision that can truly change the outcome of your child’s growth and development.

NATSAP Outcomes Report of Residential Treatment Programs
This report highlights the results of evaluating the therapeutic impact of programs offered by members of the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP). Fifty-one NATSAP programs contributed data from 2017 to 2023, measuring their clients’ mental, behavioral, and relationship health. The project was started by NATSAP program leaders who saw the value in scientifically demonstrating how residential treatment programs make a difference.
The primary tool used in this study is the Youth Outcome Questionnaire (Y-OQ), which is one of the most researched and reliable outcome measures for youth worldwide. The Y-OQ helps assess the effectiveness of therapeutic treatment by asking questions about a teen’s decision-making, relationships, emotional regulation, and mental health. A higher score indicates more distress, while a healthy range is a score of 46 or below.
As part of the NATSAP study, both parents and teens completed the Y-OQ when they first entered a residential program, again at discharge or graduation, and once more six to twelve months after graduation. We’ve been collecting this data since 2007 and now have thousands of data points to better understand and improve the impact of these programs. NATSAP’s findings were that the average score for adolescents entering a treatment program was 73 (unhealthy amount of distress). Meanwhile, the Y-OQ average score for discharged adolescents was 46.3, and the average score for adolescents who graduated six months to a year later was 46.1 (both healthy scores).

The research provided by NATSAP has shown that residential treatment programs are effective in improving mental health and family functioning.
Residential Treatment Programs Help Struggling Teens
There are various ways that residential treatment centers can provide lasting help to your teen. Some of the most advantageous parts of sending your child to a mental health treatment program are the ability for them to decompress, have a stable place to grow and learn, learn how to communicate effectively with family and friends, be able to reflect on their past experiences and change the way they behave, and parent education and involvement.
Disconnecting from Negative Past Experiences
By sending your teen to a residential program, you’ll remove them from their home environment, peers and friends, and behavioral ploys. Being able to disconnect from their present lives and negative situations in a safe and emotionally supportive environment is what a struggling teen needs to focus on themselves. Residential treatment centers have trained staff, enriching activities, and effective therapies to promote change and enhance self-confidence.
Stable Environment
Placing your teen in a safe residential treatment program can replace the unstable environment they are currently in. During treatment, they will not have access to substances, negative or toxic relationships, or harmful influences. Teens can start to grow when they are in a stable and welcoming environment meant to help them. Struggling teens will typically start to do better academically and emotionally because they have the encouraging space to do so. The stability of treatment programs allows struggling teens to maintain a healthy schedule and bring their positive new habits home with them.
Calming Environment
In some cases, struggling teens come from a home environment that is not conducive to their healthy emotional development. This may include family conflict or dysfunction due to the behavioral issues of the teen. A residential treatment center provides a space to learn how to have healthy and effective conversations for both teens and their parents. Learning how to communicate effectively can positively change family dynamics and interactions, leading to fewer arguments and more understanding. Having an unstable home environment isn’t good for anyone in the family, once better relationships are established during treatment, these new communication skills will continue into home life.
Reflecting and Changing
Most residential treatment programs include intensive and experiential therapies, allowing your child to learn from their past experiences and positively change their behaviors. Treatment programs help adolescents understand why their choices weren’t good and how to make choices that will enhance their lives. Teens will also learn about their personal limitations, what the outcomes are for their behaviors, and how their choices have contributed to their own problems and unhappiness. Residential treatment facilities provide a safe space for teens to really look inward and find the strength to change for the better. During treatment, your teen will be safe from self-destructive behavior and become immersed in a therapeutic environment meant to help them.
Parent Education and Involvement
Including parents in the treatment of their ‘troubled teen’ is crucial to residential treatment centers. The teen in the situation shouldn’t be solely blamed, as behavioral issues typically arise from larger family dynamics or issues. Parents must take the time to understand their child’s actions or behaviors and try to reflect on their own behaviors. Families must resolve their issues together in order to improve their family dynamic and have healthy relationships. As a parent with a student in a youth residential treatment program, you should be doing your part at home as well. This means reading any recommended books from the treatment program, attending family workshops or therapy, and showing up for parent or family days at the treatment center. Your child needs to know that you are dedicated to healing the entire family as well as their successful recovery and healing.

So, Are Residential Treatment Programs Successful?
NATSAP’s data proves that, in most cases, residential treatment programs are extremely helpful to adolescents struggling with mental health, behavioral issues, toxic relationship patterns, or other problems. Residential treatment for adolescents can seem like a big step to take, but if you have exhausted many options as a parent, you should consider sending your child for treatment. Residential treatment facilities are safe, inclusive, and welcoming places where your child can learn about themselves, their choices, and how to be the best they can be.
