Conquering the Chaos: 5 Steps to Success in Tackling a Messy House

A messy house can be very stressful. Clothes pile up, clutter builds up and the once-comfortable space becomes overwhelming. But breathe! You can recover your living space. Here’s how to clean a mess and emerge victorious – with a clean home rewarded.

1. Mindset Shift: From Dreading to Doing

Conquering the Chaos: 5 Steps to Success in Tackling a Messy House

The first hurdle is usually psychological. That mess is overwhelming. Reframe your approach. See it as a chore you can do to make a more organized and fun environment.

Some motivational tips:

Visualize the end result: Imagine feeling good about a clean space. Imagine relaxing in a clean room.

Set realistic goals: Try to do not much at once. Break up the cleaning into smaller tasks. Small victories are fine – whether clearing a surface or tackling a room.

Reward yourself: Celebrate your progress! Have a little break after finishing a task or give yourself a small reward.

2. Gear Up for Battle: Gather Your Supplies

Having the right tools helps with almost any job. Take out some cleaning supplies first. So here’s a basic checklist to get you started:

Cleaning cloths: Microfiber cloths work well for general cleaning.

Multi-surface cleaner: Select a general cleaner for most surfaces in your home.

Glass cleaner: To keep your windows and mirrors sparkling clean.

Bathroom cleaner: Designed to remove grime and disinfect bathroom surfaces.

Dish soap and sponges: For those dirty dishes stacked high.

Laundry detergent: Some new laundry will make your space feel fresher.

Garbage bags: Get different sizes for trash and possible donations.

Storage bins or boxes: These are essential for organizing clutter.

3. Conquer the Trash: One Bag at a Time

Start with the simplest and most immediate task – hauling away the trash. Take a garbage bag through each room. Everything else that isn’t waste – food scraps, empty packaging, old receipts – throw away whatever is obviously waste.

This initial decluttering will give you a sense of accomplishment and make the next steps less daunting.

4. Tame the Laundry Monster

Dirty laundry makes for a messy house. Gather all the laundry you can find – clothes hampers, baskets – even those that pile on the floor by the chair. Launder laundry in accordance with care instructions and start a load. Collect any stray laundry items you find during the cleaning while the first load washes.

5. Declutter Each Room: Empower Your Power of “Letting Go”

Now comes the real cleaning work – decluttering. Here are some tips:

Living Room: Address surfaces first. Clear coffee tables, put away magazines and books and return misplaced items. Remove furniture clutter by throwing away old magazines, organizing remote controls and putting away throw blankets.

Bedroom: First make the bed. This simple action creates order immediately. Declutter surfaces such as dressers and nightstands. Dresses should be folded and put away, with anything that is worn out or not needed discarded.

Kitchen: Empty the sink and clean countertops. Expired food and unused utensils should be tossed in cabinets and drawers. Get organized in the refrigerator and pantry – throw away spoiled food and organize what remains.

Bathroom: Clear toiletries and cosmetics off the counter. Put away unused items or donate unopened toiletries to reduce shower/bath clutter.

In all rooms, the key is the one-touch rule. When handling something, decide what happens immediately: Keep it, toss it, or donate it. Never put something down with the intention of sorting it later – that pile will only get bigger!
